Pathway Programs offer a dynamic exploration of industry-based experiences and learning.

Direct entrance pathways to tertiary and post-secondary study, complement and enhance our students’ opportunities, as well as offer an employment advantage.

All girls from Year 10 to Year 12 at Fairholme College participate in Pathways Programs. We believe that by beginning a Pathway Program earlier in the girls’ schooling, it ensures they are making informed career and subject choices, having ‘tasted’ or experienced an area of interest outside of traditional subject offerings.

What's so good about our Pathway Programs?

Get a taste

Our students get the opportunity to explore areas of career interest earlier in their schooling, ensuring they are equipped to make informed subject choices.

Achieve industry qualifications

Gaining a nationally-recognised qualification gives our girls an edge when entering the workforce and can provide pathways into tertiary study.

Gain valuable experience

Our Pathway Programs help students to gain valuable workplace experience and improve their life skill sets prior to leaving school.

Contribute to ATAR Results

Certificate III and above level qualifications can contribute directly to ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) calculation.

Making informed decisions

The success and subsequent longevity of these programs, is evident when SET Planning with our girls throughout Years 10, 11 and 12. Exposure to study and practical placement in an area of career interest at this early stage, assists with our girls’ decision-making processes, which enables them to make more relevant and informed subject choices.

Contributing directly to ATAR Results

Another bonus to our Pathway Programs, under the new ATAR system, is that a Certificate III and above level qualification can contribute directly to ATAR calculation. This gives many of our girls peace of mind as they head into their Senior year with a guaranteed ATAR result.

Enhancing our students' opportunities

Gaining a nationally-recognised qualification can provide a pathway into tertiary study and gives our girls an edge when entering the workforce. We see our girls experience success in their ATAR subjects, tertiary study and employment, all due to this program.

The program can assist with:

  • direct entry into various universities
  • enhances scholarship, residential college and job applications
  • success in ATAR subjects and contributing to students' ATAR result
  • gaining and improving students' workplace, study and life skill-sets
  • building the girls' resume
  • providing employment options.

Fairholme College Health Hub

Providing the most relevant and diverse practical, hands-on hospital, nursing, allied health and medical placement opportunity for our girls.

Health Services is one of our long-standing, advanced Pathway Programs. The program is run from our Fairholme Health Hub — a 3-bed simulated hospital ward with Allied Health station, housed on-campus.

The creation of the Fairholme College Health Hub ensures our Health, Allied Health and Medical students can train in Toowoomba, as well as Brisbane, while still accessing the high-quality training opportunity Mater Education delivers out of the Mater Hospital, Brisbane.

It has also allowed fruitful partnerships with our local hospitals, St. Vincent’s and St. Andrew’s, and other dynamic health organisations, like Lifeflight, Southern Queensland Rural Health (SQRH) and RMEA/QRME.

Students in the spotlight

By Sarah Richardson August 1, 2025
In the first week of term, our Year 10 students traded textbooks and timetables for real-world workplaces, embarking on a journey that opened their eyes to the many possibilities beyond the school gates. This annual work experience program, delivered by the Fairholme Pathways Centre, offers students the chance to explore industries they’ve long been curious about or discover new passions. During the week, the girls stepped into roles that spanned a fascinating range of professions: from the high-tech world of cybersecurity to the hands-on care of veterinary clinics and physiotherapy practices. Some students experienced the fastpaced environments of surgery centres and radiology clinics, while others found themselves immersed in the precision of equine veterinary services or the creativity of marketing and jewellery design. Careers in education were popular too, with placements at kindergartens and primary schools, and for those drawn to justice, law firms offered an insightful glimpse into the legal world. Many of these choices reflect the Specialist Elective Programs the students are pursuing, including qualifications like the Diploma of Business and Social Media Marketing, Certificate IV in Crime and Justice, Certificate III in Fitness, Certificate III in Early Education and Children’s Services and Certificate II in Animal Care. Our Year 10 students are provided with six hours per fortnight in their timetable to dedicate to completing a Specialist Elective Program, providing real-world experiences that help bring classroom learning to life. Together, these programs and real world experiences help bridge the gap between study and future careers. One of the highlights of the week was the immersive placement for students undertaking the Certificate II and III in Health Services Assistant. These students travelled to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, where they participated in two transformative days of hands-on learning. Partnering with Mater Education, they stepped into real hospital scenarios, learning about patient care, wound dressing, feeding assistance, vital sign monitoring, and even midwifery. Beyond clinical skills, the girls built invaluable connections with patients, gaining a deep understanding of compassion in healthcare. At Fairholme College, preparing students for life beyond school isn’t just about what happens inside the classroom. Thanks to the dedicated work of our Pathways Centre, initiatives like the Year 10 work experience program ensure that each student steps forward equipped not only with knowledge, but with vision, purpose and real-world insight.

To find your calling in life—and to feel a deep connection to a vocation—is a special thing. For Sophie Byatt, that calling has always been clear: she knew from a young age that she wanted to care for and serve others. A career in healthcare is calling her. Now in Year 11, Sophie is undertaking the Health Services Advanced Pathway Program through Fairholme’s Health Hub—a fully equipped, on-campus simulated hospital ward with an Allied Health station. The Fairholme Health Hub is a unique offering in skilling our next generation of health professionals. For girls like Sophie, it has provided the opportunity to learn and explore a job in healthcare in real time. After successfully completing Certificates II and III in Health Support Services, Sophie has enrolled in the STATIM Micro-credential Program. This unique initiative allows her to gain hands-on experience by taking shifts in hospitals and aged care facilities under the guidance of registered nurse mentors. Learning on the job is giving Sophie—and other students like her— the skills and confidence to get a head start in their healthcare careers. Sophie’s mother, Tamika Byatt, says the program has opened countless doors and given Sophie the clarity that a career in health is the right path for her. Through her work caring for the elderly, sick, and vulnerable in the community, Sophie has also connected with Fairholme Old Girls and former staff members. These experiences have deepened her sense of purpose and commitment to serving others. Looking ahead, Sophie plans to study a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Southern Queensland in 2027, with aspirations to specialise in paediatrics or midwifery. Well done to each of our Year 11 and Year 12 students who have recently completed the STATIM Micro-credential Program: Sophie Byatt, Serah Vimal, Olivia Kennedy and Lucy Schwennesen. The much-awaited ATAR results have been released. The anticipation has been replaced by relief, and, for Fairholme’s senior cohort of 2024, there’s cause for celebration. This inspiring group of young women have demonstrated the Fairholme way through impressive traits of perseverance, resilience, and positivity – traits that will hold them in good stead long into their diverse and promising futures. Notably, each 2024 senior finished her year eligible for university entrance as well as a plethora of pathway choices including early entry offers for over one third of the cohort. For others, there has been the nervous focus on a specific ATAR result required to ensure entry into a specific course. Options look especially promising for the 36% of the ATAR-eligible students who achieved a score in the 90s. Of note too, two students achieved perfect scores in two of their individual subjects – and three students in one of their individual subjects. Additionally, 7.2% of the cohort achieved scores in the 99 range and 24% of the cohort in the 95 and above range. As a College, we celebrate each and all of our Year 12 graduates – we have appreciated their contributions to the College throughout their schooling, and, importantly, we look to their futures with great optimism. For this generous and inclusive senior cohort of 2024, we are both proud and grateful.
