Mastering the Mater
Through the Specialist Elective program, Fairholme College has partnered with Mater Education to offer a unique opportunity to gain first-hand practical training at the Mater Hospital, Brisbane. Girls studying a Certificate III in Health Services, or a Certificate III in Allied Health Services, have attended their first simulated training day.
Arlie Hollindale, Co-ordinator of Vocational Education and Training, says the hands on training has been a wonderful experience and has given the girls a better sense of working in the health profession.
“The girls’ training focused on Positioning and Manual Handling using slide sheets, hoists and pat slides, bed pan usage, patient dental hygiene, bed-making and correct usage of wheelchair mobility aids.”
The Health students will travel to the Mater Hospital twice more this year, to complement their training. They’ll also spend time shadowing Healthcare Professionals in the Acute care wards.
