Fairholme Netballers attend State Camp
Congratulations to Lucy Mantova, Year Nine, and Jillian Smolenksi, Year Ten, who were selected to take part in Netball Queensland’s Regional Academy State Camp held in Brisbane recently.
Lucy and Jillian are members of the 2016 Netball Queensland Darling Downs Regional Academy squad selected last November. The squad is made up of the most promising young netballers, aged 14-16 years, from across the Darling Downs.
The Academy program adopts the Netball Australia Dare to Develop a Diamond content and provides development, education and support structures for talented athletes. Lucy and Jillian and their team mates joined Academy squads from across Queensland at the state camp, which included attending the Queensland Firebirds home game win against NSW Swifts on Saturday night at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
The camp consisted of practical court sessions with state level coaches, and addresses from Netball Queensland High Performance speakers, as well as sessions on well-being, self-management, pool recovery, and match play. Darling Downs Academy coach, Jodie Ferguson, of Toowoomba, who is a former state netball player, said the camp was the first stage in the process of selecting a Queensland Academy development squad later in the year.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for our netball players to be exposed to high level coaching,” Mrs Ferguson said.
Lucy was talent identified by Netball Queensland selectors at last year’s State Age Netball Championships held on the Gold Coast, whilst playing goal keeper for the Warwick and District Netball Association 13 years representative team. From there she was invited to trial for the DD Academy squad, and was selected along with Jillian and 15 other netballers from Roma, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe and Warwick.
Lucy and Jillian are both members of Fairholme’s first Junior Vicki Wilson team, with Lucy being a member of the Highfields Netball Association’s 14 years State Age representative netball side, and Jillian a member of the Highfields 16 years State Age team. Both girls will contest the Netball Queensland State Age Championships at Palm Beach in July.
