Super Fish selected to swim for Australia

Year 10 student selected to represent Australia at the Deaflympics in Sofia (Hungary)

Few swimmers could wish for a better start to the season than Fairholme student Julia Algie. Following her outstanding success at the Queensland Secondary School Championships, where she set 7 State Championship records in the Multi Disability Class, Julia has been selected to represent Australia at the Deaflympics in Sofia (Hungary).

She will join over 4000 athletes from more than 70 nations at what is the second oldest multiple sports games outside of the Summer Olympics.

First held in 1924, the Deaflympics provides elite sporting opportunities for hearing impaired and deaf athletes and is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. Deaf athletes are excluded from the Paralympics due to their inability to hear starting commands.

The 2013 Deaflympics, the 22nd instalment of this long running event, will commence on the 26th July and conclude on the 4th August. Just like the Olympic Games, the event is held every 4 years with 16 sports contested in Bulgaria
