Careers Education Program - Goals and Outcomes

As a result of the Career Education Program, the students at Fairholme will be able to demonstrate:

Careers Education within the Framework of Careers Curriculum is an important aspect of the Junior, Middle and Senior School. All aspects of the curriculum development are working towards fitting with the Australian Careers Development Blueprint:

What is the Blueprint?

Looking closely at blueprintThe Australian Blueprint for Career Development is a framework that can be used to design, implement and evaluate career development interventions for young people and adults.

At its core, the Blueprint identifies the skills, attitudes and knowledge that individuals need to need to effectively manage their life, learning and work roles in the 21st century.

People develop these career management skills in a variety of settings: at home, in classrooms, in the playground, in the workplace and on the sporting field. However, career development programs make the development of these competencies more intentional for more people.

The Blueprint provides teachers, parents, career development practitioners, employment service providers, employers or others who are in a position to support people’s careers and transitions with a nationally consistent framework which:

Year 10:

Careers Education has become a vital component of a comprehensive education for young people. With the requirement of the Senior Education Training Plan (SET Plan) being completed with all Year 10 students state-wide it is important that all Year 10 students are offered an opportunity to learn about themselves, the world of work and how they can develop a career pathway that suits their abilities, personalities and aspirations.

Year 10 is now the beginning of the Senior Phase of Learning so therefore the time when students begin the exciting, but often daunting task of developing their own personal career plan. To ensure that Fairholme students feel well equipped to make these decisions the curriculum caters for careers classes to enhance each student’s knowledge and therefore opportunity for success. Included in this program is a comprehensive work experience program that facilitates personal growth for each student and offers them the chance to explore prospective career pathways.

The focus will be on:

Area A – Personal Management (Phase III & IV)
Area B – Learning and work exploration (Phase III & IV)
Area C – Career Building (Phase III & IV)

Work experience

To help Year 10 students practically apply the information that they receive during their careers education lessons all students are required to participate in a week’s work experience at the end of semester 1. The students are required to research and arrange their own placement to ensure they are offered an opportunity to learn about job search techniques and making contact with prospective employers. This can be quite a challenging experience so it is always helpful to have parent support and guidance. Mrs Laura Anderson and Mrs Karen Morris are available to assist students wherever possible.

Year 11:

Students will be engaged in careers activities and discussions during Life Skill Lessons. These lessons will cater to the needs of the students and will ensure that the Senior Education Training Plan continues to be an integral part of each student’s lives and will also focus on the Career Development Framework with respect to the final phases of Area A and Area B competencies.

Continue discussions on: All aspects of the Australian Blueprint for Career Development Phases with particular emphasis on the final phases.

Year 12:

More personalised Careers discussions will be embedded into the Senior timetable with Year meetings utilised to discuss QTAC processes and a broad range of other topics. In addition to this guest speakers will be organised with a particular focus on future planning.

Careers Counselling available upon request with each year 12 student offered a personalised session with Mrs Anderson to discuss future pathway planning and personal barriers that may be impacting on their decision making processes.
