‘Champions Read’ was the theme for 2012 Book Week celebrations. Kindy to Year 6 students not only demonstrated that they are champion readers, but also champions in many other areas of life. The Book Week ‘Champions Parade’ was an entertaining way to celebrate current and future champions from all walks of life. Having paraded their outfit, each student announced in what they are currently a champion or in what area they would like to be a future champion.

During library lessons, students from Prep to Year 6 eagerly awaited the results of the ‘Junior Judges competition’. Firstly each of the picture books were read for enjoyment and then the students analysed and judged each of the books shortlisted in the Book of the Year awards. Having individually decided on their winning books, the class votes were tallied and submitted as part of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Junior Judges Project. During the announcement of results, the girls’ excitement was evidenced by the passionate applause and cheers that echoed throughout the library.

This year in the Middle & Senior School, Book Week was celebrated as part of Get SmART activities. Working in their Pastoral Care Groups, Year 11 & 12 students created ‘Verse Stacks’ using books from the Fairholme Junior Library and the TLC Library. Download ‘Verse Stacks’ (470KB PDF).

Both the process and the results showed that Fairholme students are excellent at working together producing interesting & creative verses in a short time-frame. Year 10 students enjoyed the challenge of transforming items including a chair and table with the text from old encyclopaedia.

The resulting ‘Text Art’ installations were inventive and unique. Year 9 students were ‘Champion Readers’ as they enthusiastically read some of their favourite picture books to students from Kindy to Year 4. Friendships across the Junior & Middle school blossomed over a book. Meanwhile, Year 7 & 8 girls were racing against the clock to re-life old books into pieces of art including sculptures, jewellery and book bags. Their artistic and resourceful creations are on the display in TLC Library.
