Year 9 Curriculum

Middle School students at Fairholme Fairholme's Middle School

In Year 9 core subjects of Mathematics, Science, English and Humanities are separated to prepare students for the transition to Senior School.

In addition, the concept of choice is increasingly important, so students are given the opportunity to choose three electives from the following list:

A further five electives designed to offer students deep learning in a specific area of interest, have been developed. Students select two Deep Learning electives, to be studied for one semester each.

Wet and Wild Science
Throughout the semester, students participate in the construction of a self-sustaining hydroponics enterprise that includes a fish pond ecosystem that supplies its own nutriments and water requirements. The students learn to use specific techniques to monitor water quality, and plant and fish health. They select appropriate plants to grow organically, harvest and market.

Film, Television and Media This could be the beginning of a future film director's career. Students have the opportunity to undertake a practical 'hands on' course that explores:

Textile Design
This elective enables students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to be creative in the production of textile items. Activities include:

In this elective, students are given a 'hands on' view of how a business operates in the world of profit and loss. They experience opportunities to work with people from the Business Community to:

This course has been designed to provide students with an insight into the world of elite athletes in both individual and team sports. Students are given opportunities to develop a broad understanding in the fields of recreation, sport science and high performance and related health fields. Students examine issues such as:
