Learning Enhancement Program - Junior School
Learning Enhancement at Fairholme College is an innovative and multifaceted program which facilitates and provides diverse and rich programs for all students recognising that they can be at different stages along the learning spectrum. The learning enhancement team comprises a range of professionals with expertise to provide professional advice, student assessment, and programs for students requiring either support, extension or acceleration.
A significant component of learning enhancement is the incorporation of a differentiated curriculum in many subject year levels and subject areas, allowing students to access learning experiences at either a core, modified or extension level where deemed necessary.
In addition to this, learning enhancement for all students at Fairholme College occurs through the involvement of key learning enhancement staff in the development of engaging curriculum and the provision of purposeful enrichment programs.
Our Learning Enhancement team includes a coordinator who oversees the various components of the programmes, a specialist learning enhancement teacher with expertise in both support and extension, and three learning enhancement assistants who work directly with the Junior School students.
In addition to this, the College counsellor and the learning pathways coordinator also work collaboratively with the learning enhancement team when needed. The staff are based in the Learning Enhancement Centre which has been specifically designed to support the various programs on offer. Junior School Learning Enhancement programs are classroom based.
Varied programmes for students, staff and parents
Learning Enhancement provides varied programs for students, staff and parents. These include-:
- Specialist advice for teachers and parents for shared approaches in class and at home;
- In-class and small group assistance for students;
- Planning for differentiated curriculum;
- Formal assessment of individual student needs where deemed appropriate by the Learning Enhancement coordinator and Learning Enhancement teacher in consultation with the Head of Junior School;
- Individual education plans for students assessed as requiring additional learning support or extension/accelerative options;
- Early intervention programmes in the Junior School;
- Subject and homework help sessions conducted during and after school by Junior School teachers;
- Co-curricular interest groups;
- Facilitation of student participation in a variety of competitions including Opti-MINDS, and Mathematics Olympiad;
- Referral to external specialists.
