Our beginnings…
Fairholme College originated from Spreydon College, a school which was situated on the corner of Warra and Rome Streets in the Newtown area of Toowoomba. This College was opened by the Thompson sisters on 4 February, 1908, with Beth and Jessie the joint Principals, and Margaret being responsible for boarders. Patronage from the Presbyterian Church in Brisbane was sought and granted from May 1909.
In 1914 a private company was established and the new Directors changed the name of Spreydon College to The Presbyterian Ladies College Limited, which opened in January 1915 with Miss Amy Carson appointed Principal during first term. With increasing enrolments, the Board acquired more suitable property at Fairholme which had been generously offered by Mrs Margaret Cameron for purchase.
In July 1917, the Primary students relocated to Fairholme, and the school operated on two campuses for the second half of 1917, under the principalship of Miss Amy Carson. At the beginning of 1918, the whole school relocated to Fairholme. We entered our second century as a provider of quality girls’ education in 2008.
Our growth…
Since that time, many building programs have seen the development of a well resourced school set amidst beautiful gardens; a place to learn. The generosity and vision of members of the Fairholme Foundation and the wider Fairholme community have meant that quality facilities are available for our girls. The Foundation was established in 1989 and continues to operate through the support of parents – past and present, and staff members who work to raise funds to enhance the fabric of our College.
From 1 July 2000 The Fairholme Foundation Building Fund was also registered as a Deductible Gift Recipient which allows tax deductibility for donors. We seek to foster a strong Foundation which will allow the College to upgrade facilities for our girls’ benefit, without significant increases within the fee structure. Our girls’ future…
As we move to the end of the 2010 financial year, we do seek donations for The Building Fund which is focused on the following important projects:
- Assembly Hall - air conditioning
- Boarding House - entrance and bathrooms refurbishment
- L Block Assembly - refurbishment
- Gymnasium - floor resurfacing
All gifts of $2 or more are tax deductible and each donation does make a difference to the quality of facilities that we can provide for our girls, both now and in the future. Thank you for giving to our College – importantly, your gift provides for tomorrow and all of its possibilities.
