Transition to Middle School

Parents are becoming increasingly aware of the need to provide a longer and more thorough period of transition from Primary to Secondary schooling.

Fairholme College has established a Transition to Middle School program in Years 5 and 6 to provide girls with an early start on a road to academic success for which Fairholme is well known. Most of our Year 12 students receive offers of tertiary places.

The Transition to Middle School Program provides the security of a class teacher along with specialist teachers in Music, Modern Languages, Technology, Physical Education and Christian Education. They can also experience, earlier, the supportive atmosphere of a "girls only" classroom.

Girls in Years 5 and 6 have access to the well established on-line Learning Centre. Boarding places are available in a separate "Town House" environment.

In the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field, and in the dormitories, the Transition to Middle School program provides the girls the edge when they arrive in the secondary school.

Curriculum

Caring and committed teachers in spacious, well-equipped classrooms provide a balance between formal and child centred learning. Excursions and special events are held throughout the year to enhance the learning process.

Challenging teaching and learning activities in the Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and the Environment, Technology, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, and Languages Other than English contribute to an all encompassing curriculum.

Christian Education, Drama, Music, Physical Education, French, German and Japanese, taught by specialist teachers, complement the rich curriculum.

Regular use of the on-line Learning Centre aims to foster a lifelong appreciation of the value of books and reading while providing the children with experience in accessing electronically delivered information.

Extensive computer access is incorporated across the curriculum, at all year levels, with a sequential program to develop appropriate skills. The use of online learning initiatives enables the students to construct meaning, present knowledge and enhance their learning techniques.

Through an Enrichment Program and participation in competitions initiated by outside organisation, the academic potential for the children is explored. Fairholme Junior offers an extensive co-curricula program to support, strengthen and enhance learning.
