ARTS in ACTION

Extremesland at the Empire

The year 12 Drama Showcase ‘The Profiteers’ was performed at the Empire Theatre Studio recently to an attentive and appreciative audience. This Brechtian inspired show, written and directed by senior drama teacher Genevieve Duncan, parallels the concept of war with the catastrophic weather event of January 2011, where the aftermath resembled a war zone.

The show follows the life of Worthy, local watermelon farmer, who has lost everything in Extremesland summer floods. Desperately trying to get back on his feet, Worthy is continually overthrown by The Profiteers; Government, Insurance and Big Business who stand to make a tidy profit from the aftermath of the floods. Along with his new found love interest Wiki, and the ever faithful Joe Blow (Whistle Blower), the three make it their mission to bring the Profiteers down and restore Extremesland to its former self.

Needless to say, the show was a raging success with staff, parents and friends enjoying a confronting, challenging but light hearted performance. Congratulations to all involved!

Hitting the High Notes

Fairholme Choirs join the Brisbane Chamber Choir as guest performers at ‘Of Heaven and Earth’ concert.

On Saturday, 23 February, the Fairholme College Choir and Chamber Choir shared a concert with the Brisbane Chamber Choir at St Luke’s Anglican Church in Toowoomba. The Brisbane Chamber Choir, directed by Graeme Morton (AM), presented a rich tapestry of beautiful choral music from across the ages, as featured on their new CD, ‘Of Earth & Heaven‘ - and which was also the title of the concert.

Under the direction of Head of Performance Music, Mr Alex Dixon, the choirs also sang repertoire befitting this theme – including music such as Brightest and Best (Archer), Nigra Sum (Casals), God be in my Head (Rutter), Weep, No More (Childs) and In Flanders Fields (Tilley).

All choirs sang beautifully on the night and it was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to hear and experience quality choral music performed to such a high calibre. It was also encouraging for the girls to receive excellent feedback regarding their focused and atmospheric performances.

Thank you to all the families and friends who supported our choirs and helped to make the night so memorable. We look forward to hearing the Brisbane Chamber Choir again on Saturday 7 September when they will return to Toowoomba to present a Choral Classics Concert, this time featuring the Toowoomba Grammar School Choirs.
